COVENANT 13 – WORSHIP IN THE SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH

The Sacramental Community of the Coworkers of Christ embraces the concept of liturgy as the “work of the people.”  This goes beyond simply attending a service; it signifies active participation in the unfolding drama of God’s grace.  Within the context of sacramental worship, this work of the people takes on a profound meaning.

The liturgy is not merely a performance by clergy for the congregation.  It’s a collaborative act where every member has a role to play.  From singing hymns and reciting prayers together to offering responses and participating in the rituals, the congregation becomes a united body actively worshiping God.  This communal participation reflects the essence of the Church as the Body of Christ, where each member contributes their unique gifts (1 Corinthians 12:12-27).

The “work of the people” extends beyond physical actions.  It involves an internal engagement with the liturgy.  Following along with scripture readings, offering prayers from the heart, and meditating on the significance of the sacraments are all forms of participation.  This active engagement allows the liturgy to transform from a series of rituals into a transformative experience, deepening one’s connection to God and the community.

When the liturgy is offered in the language of the people, it transcends mere linguistics and words as it becomes the worship of their heart.  It’s not just about understanding the mechanics of prayers and hymns, but about expressing their deepest traditions, emotions, hopes, and vulnerabilities before God.  In the language of their tradition, worshippers can connect with the liturgy on a profound emotional level, allowing their full selves to participate in the sacred drama. This authenticity fosters a deeper connection with God and fosters a more genuine sense of community, united not just by physical proximity, but by the shared language of the soul.

The Eucharist stands as the central focus of liturgical worship.  Here, the “work of the people” reaches its most profound expression.  Through the preparation, participation, and reflection on the Eucharist, the community co-creates a sacred space where God’s grace is encountered in the breaking of His

Body and the pouring out of His Blood.  The congregation isn’t simply receiving something from the clergy; during this anamnesis we are actively involved in the unfolding mystery of the Sacraments.  This shared work fosters a sense of unity and purpose, reminding everyone that we are co-laborers with God in the ongoing work of redemption.

By embracing the liturgy as the work of the people, the Coworkers of Christ foster a more meaningful and engaging worship experience.  This participatory approach deepens faith, strengthens the community, and allows everyone to actively contribute to the unfolding wonder of God’s presence within the Sacraments.
