COVENANT 8 – BY WISDOM A HOUSE IS BUILT
The Coworkers of Christ embrace a flexible living structure. Individuals and families can choose to live in cell groups or hermitages, separate from a central location. Conversely, those living in close proximity can form local chapters that meet regularly. However, the core structure of the community revolves around the abbey or religious house, which functions as a monastery, worship center, and retreat house. Initially, an abbey might exist in concept only, lacking a physical location. Over time, it will develop into a central hub for the community.
Community members demonstrate a strong commitment to mutual support. They actively care for the mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of one another, offering assistance whenever possible, especially during times of significant need. This focus on individual well-being extends to the physical design of religious houses. These spaces must provide areas for both common activities and personal reflection. A community that fails to offer private space risks creating emotional strain and ultimately hindering its own growth.
The spirit of the Coworkers of Christ compels us towards hospitality and stewardship. We recognize the blessings entrusted to us, both material and spiritual, and believe they are best used in service of others. Our communities strive to be havens of peace and hospitality, welcoming those seeking spiritual refuge or a listening ear. We actively participate in the life of the broader Christian community, sharing our gifts and collaborating on initiatives that serve the common good.
The traditional image of a monastery might conjure a secluded sanctuary nestled away from the hustle and bustle of the city. However, while the Coworkers of Christ certainly embrace and recognize the spiritual value of that form of monasticism we also recognize the growing need for spiritual guidance and support within urban environments and the inner cities. As such our communities are increasingly looking into establishing religious houses in urban areas, embracing a spirit of New Monasticism.
New Monasticism, a contemporary movement within Christianity, emphasizes living a contemplative life while actively engaging with the social and spiritual needs of one’s urban surroundings. This aligns perfectly with the Coworkers of Christ’s commitment to hospitality and service. By establishing urban monasteries, we can provide a space for prayer and reflection in the heart of the city, while simultaneously offering practical assistance and fostering a sense of community among those seeking a deeper connection with God. These urban monasteries become vibrant centers of faith, offering a relevant and accessible expression of monastic life for the modern world.
